Humane Earth:SISCO
From Humane Earth
"Humane" means different things to different people. On Humane Earth, "humane" means that the subject has certain qualities. These are called SISCO. SISCO stands for Sustainable, Inclusive, Safe, Cruelty-free, and Other qualities directly related to the subject.
Sustainable
Be good to the Earth
Sustainable means that it can be sustained over a long time. This means it has little effect on nature. This includes the land, water, and air. It has little effect both locally and around the world.
Sustainable means it does not poison the air or water. It does not destroy the homes of animals. It does not help make the climate change.
It uses renewable resources at a slow rate. That way, they will not be used up.
Inclusive
Include everyone
Inclusive means that all people are included. They all can take part in it. They also need to know they can take part in it and feel like they can take part. They need to feel comfortable and welcome.
This includes people of all ages and education levels. It includes people with and without money. It includes people with different backgrounds, beliefs, and values.
It includes people with different abilities and needs. This may result from the condition of their bodies or minds. It may be a short-term or long-term condition.
Safe
Put no one in danger
Safe means that it does not result in any danger. This includes danger to people and to other animals. It could be danger to bodies or to minds.
Some people and other animals are more at risk of getting hurt or ill. They need to be safe too. In this way, safe is related to inclusive.
Cruelty-free
Hurt no one
Cruelty-free is about the process. It means that no people or other animals are hurt, killed, or used in a way that is not proper. Safe is about risks from the end result. Cruelty-free is about how we reach that end result.
For example, safe shampoo will not hurt you if it gets in your eyes. Cruelty-free shampoo was not tested on animals to make sure it will not hurt you.

Think about other ways to be more humane
The role of SISCO is not to limit what we mean by "humane." The role is to make our meanings share something in common. Every aspect or part of society needs different things to be humane. These are part of "other."
